Stressed out now that your family is planning on moving across the country? Long distance movers and some simple preliminary planning can alleviate a lot of the stress involved with any kind of move. Fortunately you are not alone. In fact, over 17 million people undertake long distance moves annually, based on U.S. Census Bureau data. Using some of their combined strategies you can pack and move with relative ease.

The biggest piece of advice concerns finding the best movers for your situation. Make sure you perform due diligence to find a well recommended moving company. There are numerous third party sites that provide client reviews and comments about their moving experience. Analyzing user comments in tandem with seeking referrals from friends and family will provide you with a short list of companies to talk with.

When you have identified several moving companies, you should get them to provide an estimate. Whether you chose to have them pack everything, pack it yourself or use storage pods they can give you a ballpark estimate that is typically based on total weight of your possessions and distance of the move. It should be apparent that fees are not final until everything is loaded onto the truck and formally weighed, but most reputable companies provide a fairly accurate estimate.

Packing and organizing your possessions before the movers arrive may the most daunting task ahead. By concentrating on one area at a time, you can visibly see progress that will help alleviate your stress. In terms of logistics, make sure you leave adequate pathways that can be used when moving boxes and loading the truck. Experienced movers suggest creating a staging area for sealed boxes so that you can easily concentrate on unpacked items.

Finally, you may want to investigate additional insurance for your goods and household items. While most movers have general insurance, they may not cover the total replacement cost of items that are damaged in transit. In some circumstances the movers insurance may also be limited in covering damage from weather, storms or acts of god. Regardless of the situation and distance you are moving, some preliminary planning goes a long way to insuring a stress free move.

Preliminary planning or not, moving is always a little stressful because you face a lot of uncertainty when you reach your final destination.
